Wow I loved this weeks meditation exercise one of the main
reasons is I got to visualize my dad who passed in 2002. I was able to easily get started because I have a picture of
him on my desk! My father is one
of the wisest, kindest, loving and friendliest people I know. It was not hard to become one with him during this exercise because I feel him with me every day especially on my bad days. This week’s session was a very
rewarding session and to be honest has prepared me for the week a head.
My meditative practices are few and far between, but I will
say due to this class I do try at least once a week to sit calmly and
quietly. By doing this at least
once a week I’m able to empty my mind and refocus on myself. One of the way’s mindfulness has
increased my psychological wellness is by helping me be mindful of my negative
thoughts. I allow them to enter, I
acknowledge them, then I push them right back out the door and replace them with
positive thoughts. This has really
helped me get through the funk I was in this week. This is something I will continue to do to foster greater
health and wellness in my life.
To me “one cannot lead another where one has not gone
himself” means lead by example.
How can we help someone if we haven’t been through it ourselves or if we
can’t help ourselves? I believe
that as a health and wellness professional especially when it comes to mind,
body and soul that we have to gone through it and be working on our own selves
before we can help others. I
believe by constantly learning, studying and practicing will help me implement
psychological and spiritual growth in my life.
I’ve been able to help others on their weight loss journey
because I have been through it myself.
I take the approach that “no two people are the same”, what works for
one doesn’t work for another. So I’m
able to help my clients by telling them I know what they are going through, but
just because I like to walk or run as a workout doesn’t mean they will. So we find what will work for them,
which may be just dancing around their living room to music. I love the fact that by having gone
through certain things in my life I’m able to help others go through things in
their life and help them become successful in their wellness journey!
Until next time, eat right, exercise and be happy!

Cindy,
ReplyDeleteI too used my dad in my exercise this week...I lost him in 2009. I did have more emotions that I thought I would, my connection with him is still very strong...
My mediation practices were about the same as yours...until I have this over whelming need to be alone despite the chaos around me...This exercise I must say reminded me of the type of person my dad was...and what he intends for me even though he is no longer in this physical world with me...It has always been a running joke in the family that I am just like my dad! I know there were some who were not kind in this comment...but I took it as an awesome ability that my mere presence reminded them of him...because of me!
I have never told anyone that I know their pain...because I have no idea..but I can understand the situation they are in because I have been in a similar situation....for a family member to feel the care, love, and compassion I have for them is greatest gift I can give.
The other part of that..I can also give them some ways to approach a problem...and they can amend it to their situation! Some have been very creative...and I have learned new ways to approach a problem as well!!
Enjoyed your post this week...God speed to your dad...
Cindy,
ReplyDeleteI think it is important to identify with the struggles of our clients. Like you said, it is helpful to have been through the weight loss journey in order to help another to go through it. However, do you think that an individual who has never been overweight cannot help someone who is? I definitely agree with you, and I have always thought that way for when I help others someday because I have also struggled through the journey to lose weight and be healthy. Is it fair to say that only people who have struggled can help those who want to lose weight? Just a thought. Like I said, I completely agree with you. I am much more comfortable working with someone who knows what it feels like to eat because they are sad, someone who knows what it feels like to gain weight and lose self-esteem. I just wonder if that is fair to say that we can help someone better than someone who has always chosen to be healthy.

Hi Amy,
DeleteI do believe that someone who hasn't been over weight can help someone to lose weight. I have a very good friend and mentor who is a Sports Trainer (and looks like Barbie) who has helped many individuals lose weight and train for marathons. I just know that I have many individuals say to me that it is because I've been through it and "I get it" that they feel more comfortable training with me. I hope that doesn't come off as rude because I don't mean it to sound that way. Thanks for the response and have a great week!
Cindy,
ReplyDeleteI actually just lost two people I viewed as grandparents just a couple weeks ago. I actually helped my mom drop 50 pounds and I am actually underweight so I think you can help anyone you set your mind to. It is great that you were able help others though. I personally found this exercise quite nice as well.
